Daily Challenges!
To further our quest to restore genuine social interaction, we have decided to devise a number of challenges that will help people experience social interaction while remaining conscious of the impact of cellphones in their day-to-day lives. In order to reap the benefits and experience social interaction at its fullest potential, we encourage everyone to complete our daily challenges. There will be one specific goal relating to cellphone usage and social interaction for each of the next 10 days. The challenges will increase in difficulty over the course of the time frame and we recommend you undertake this with endeavour. Please feel free to post your stories and share your experiences with friends and family.
Daily Cellphone Usage Challenge
Day 0: Install an app like Moment and simply observe how much time you spend on your phone in a day.
Alternative: If you want to track your phone usage a different way, you can add coins to a jar for each time you check your phone in the presence of others or keep a simple tally on a slip of paper.
Also, mentally prepare yourself: technology is addictive, and we’ve all come to depend on it. What you’re about to do is challenging!
Day 1: Put your phone on vibrate and avoid responding immediately to texts if you’re already interacting with someone in person.
Day 2: Completely turn off your phone for one hour and live life in the moment.
Bonus: Talk to someone during this time frame.
Day 3: Don’t bring your phone to the dinner table.
Day 4: Don’t respond to a text while you’re talking to someone else.
Day 5: Talk to someone in person instead of texting them.
Bonus: Get a sibling or friend to join you for this challenge.
Day 6: Set yourself limits on how much time you spend on your cellphone in one day.
Use this to maximize the time you spend with people in person.
Day 7: Completely turn off your phone for 2 hours and live life in the moment.
Bonus: talk to someone during this time frame.
Day 8: Turn your phone on “do not disturb” whenever you are spending time with another person.
Bonus: Encourage the other person to do the same.
Day 9: Leave your cellphone at home whenever you spend time with friends.
Bonus: Challenge all your friends to do the same—you’ll all be able to enjoy each other’s company without interruption.
Day 10: Keep all social interactions entirely cellphone-free.
Final Challenge: Make a habit of putting your phone away to enhance experiences and interactions.
Good luck with the challenges and make the most of the time you spend cellphone-free.
