Slide to Success
Though the school-wide challenge was a small success, it was a success nonetheless. The eight participants each agreed that it was a great opportunity to learn about the presence of our cellphone in our lives, as well as the manner in which we have come to depend on our devices for everything. Everyone should take a day without their cellphone in order to realize the impact our devices have on our lives. It is certain that its influence is greater than one might think. Furthermore, the significant lack of participation only further proves the point of this project: cellphones have become so deeply ingrained in our lives that we no longer fully understand how to interact on a genuine social level. “I realized just how dependent I am on my phone,” remarked a participant after the challenge (Chantigny, Herman). Cellphones are rooted deep in our everyday lives, making it very difficult to regulate our usage. “I think it’s all about finding the right balance between using your phone for useful purposes and for pleasure,” added another participant (Chantigny, Herman). Cellphones first began as very useful tools allowing people to communicate more easily with each other. Unfortunately, the line between cellphones being useful tools and dominating our lives has become blurred. It has become indiscernible whether people care more about the people with whom they communicate, or the form of communication itself.
